WITH CHRISTIAN INSISTING on stacking the dishwasher and opening a bottle of wine, Joy sat quietly in the conservatory feeling more than slightly redundant. During dinner, Sonia called and informed them she was having dinner with a friend and wouldnât be back until late. Normally, her guests would have gone into the lounge to put the TV on and relax, but Christian seemed intent on seeking out her company.
The insecurities that tormented her all her life, returned with a vengeance. Unsure how to act, or what to say, Joy switched on the radio and sat quietly, twisting her fingers around. That this mountain of a man was attracted to her was plain, and from their closeness earlier, he was big all over. Her mouth dried, and nerves took control of her mind. It wasnât as if they were hormonally challenged teenagers, for goodness sake. Her past encounters had been more wham, bam, thank you maâam, but each time she assumed something about Christian, it had been proven to be completely the opposite.
Perhaps it was time to stop bloody well worrying about what could happen, and just enjoy being with a man who made her laugh, and made her feel like the most important person in the world. When she heard his soft slippered tread on the stone flooring, she raised her head with confidence and met his gaze head on, then smiled, inviting him.
Christian handed her, not the wine she was expecting, but a martini glass filled with effervescent liquid and a kirsch cherry on a cocktail stick. He sat down, as near to her as he could possibly get. If he had gotten any closer, the blasted man would be on her lap, now that was a thought.
âWhat on earth is this?â She sniffed at the contents. They were vaguely familiar. Pear...no it couldnât be.
âBabycham,â he told her, clinking his glass against hers.
Joyâs eyes widened in surprise. âHow did you know?â
âWe were talking about the seventies remember, and I found some bottles in a shop,â he replied with satisfaction. His gaze never wavered from hers as she sipped the chilled liquid greedily then wrinkled her nose with dissatisfaction. There was something not quite right about the drink.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âThereâs something not quite right. It just doesnât taste the same as I remember,â Joy explained.
âYou probably miss the illicitness of sneakily drinking it when your parents werenât looking.â
Joy shook her head. That wasnât it.
He slapped his hands on his knees and stood up.
âShall we be naughty and raid the drinks cabinet then?â he urged.
Joy thought the idea was tempting, but waking up the next morning with a raging hangover, and having to cook breakfast on a queasy stomach didnât hold much appeal. What else could they do together? It was still rather early in the evening.
âNot really. We could watch the TV together...â
âTrivial Pursuit?â he suggested, but Joy shook her head. Take the chance and be bold, her mind screamed.
âHow about we curl up on the sofa in the lounge, have
